As part of Tyne and Wear Archives and Museums Service, Discovery Museum provides for young people an opportunity to explore the local history of the North East of England together with science, technology, engineering and mathematics through a wide range of practical and interactive tasks. This approach serves to motivate and inspire pupils to become involved, gain understanding and seek additional knowledge. A visit to the museum becomes an experience to remember. For those who cannot visit, the learning team have created a set of supportive on-line resources, a series of loan packs – the Boxes of Delight – and some virtual lessons. As a result, teachers can bring the museum into the classroom, and all of these varied strands serve to enhance pupils’ learning.
