Car park closure
The car park outside Discovery Museum is closed to allow us to create a new, outdoor plaza where we can hold events and activities.
There is limited pay and display parking available near to the museum on Blandford Square and the nearest multi-story car park is the Grainger Town car park on Waterloo Street.
Find car park information on the NE1 website.
The new plaza
We will soon have outdoor space for visitors to enjoy in the form of a public plaza with the iconic Challenger 2 tank as a focal point.
Work has begun to transform the carpark immediately outside the museum into a welcoming plaza with attractive seating and planting so that visitors and passers-by can rest and picnic outside the museum.
The Challenger 2 tank which moved to the space outside Discovery Museum from BAE Systems’ Scotswood site in October 2014, will take centre stage in the plaza.
Discovery Museum is situated in the area of Newcastle city centre known as ‘Discovery Quarter’. This area is becoming a major cultural, heritage and educational quarter encompassing Discovery Museum, the Centre for Life, Dance City, Tyne Theatre, Newcastle College and the new Discovery School. It is envisaged that the plaza development will contribute to the life and vibrancy of the area.
The plaza has been designed by the Landscape Design team, part of Communities Directorate, Newcastle City Council and the construction work is being undertaken by Highways & Local Services, also part of Communities Directorate, Newcastle City Council.
Work is due to be completed on the plaza in late summer 2016.
